Title: Cost-effective big data management in clouds

In this talk, I will first give an overview of my research in the areas of cloud computing, data management and workflow technologies, etc. Then I will talk about a more specific topic of the cost-effectiveness with regard to data management in clouds and share some of my experience in doing research.

Based on the pay-as-you-go model in cloud computing, large generated application data can be flexibly stored, re-computed and transferred with multiple cloud service providers. In this talk, I will present a novel algorithm that can calculate the minimum cost for storing and regenerating data in multiple clouds, i.e. whether data should be stored or deleted, and furthermore where to store or to regenerate whenever they are reused. It also achieves the best trade-off among computation, storage and bandwidth costs in clouds, which are three key factors for the cost of cloud resources.

Dong Yuan received the B. Eng. degree and M. Eng. degree from Shandong University, Jinan, China, in 2005 and 2008, the PhD degree from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia, in 2012, all in computer science. He is a Lecturer in School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the University of Sydney. His research interests include cloud computing, data management in parallel and distributed systems, scheduling and resource management, business process management and workflow systems.
