Abstract: Graphs are widely used for modeling complex structured data, with a broad spectrum of applications such as biochemistry, bioinformatics, web search and social network, road network, etc. Over the last decade, tremendous research efforts have been devoted to many fundamental problems in managing and analyzing network data. Some interesting problems include graph structure search, node-pair similarity search, and graph pattern matching, as well as a number of classic problems. In this talk, I will provide an overview of recent advances in graph based search, and address some of the open issues where the technical part mainly consists of recent research progresses in DBG@UNSW in the area of graph processing.

Short-bio:
Xuemin Lin is a professor in the school of computer science and engineering at UNSW and recently awarded the university Chair Professor: Scientia Professor. Currently, he is the head of database group in the school. Xuemin’s research interests lie in databases, algorithms, and complexities. Specifically, we is working in the areas of graph data, spatial-temporal data, streaming data, uncertain data, text data, etc. He published 200+ papers; among them, 100+ papers are published in top tier venues, and 14 papers are ranked as best papers. In keyword search, his works are ranked as the best student paper award in ICDE07 (a top tier conference) and the spotlight paper in IEEE TKDE 2011 Dec issue (a top tier journal) , respectively. In spatial-temporal data processing, his works are ranked one of the best papers in ICDE10 and ICDE12, respectively. In text data processing, his work is ranked as one of the best papers in SIGMOD2011 (the best DB conference). In graph data processing, his work is ranked as one of the best papers in ICDE2013. Xuemin was an associate editor of ACM TODS (2008-2014). Currently, he is an associate editor of TKDE (2013-) and WWW Journal, respectively.
